Aikido

The way (do) to unite (ai) all one’s inner energies (ki) does not require great strength. Students learn to redirect their opponent’s energy, so an attacker is thrown by their own directional force or immobilized by a joint. All the techniques depend on spherical motion and the effective use of centrifugal and centripetal forces. There are no tournaments or competitions since practice depends upon cooperation between partners to practice technique and fall safely. Unlike its “soft” appearance, it can be vigorous and dynamic; and Aikido contains devastating techniques to disarm and subdue. Even at the beginner’s level, basic movements can be difficult. The whole body must move continuously in a coordinated manner with speed, vigor, and power. Mental concentration, agility, balance, and reflex action are developed by regular practice.
