Total Immersion
Swim Studio in Lake Placid
A family-owned
swim instruction business with a twenty-year history of transforming
strugglers into swimmers, Total Immersion is proud to bring the
world’s most respected swim instruction to the Adirondacks. The Total
Immersion Swim Studio in Lake Placid is located in Fitness Revolution
and is run by Coach/Manager Betsy Laughlin.
FAQs for Club Members and Locals:
I want to swim! Can I swim in Total Immersion’s
Endless Pool?
Good for you! Swimming is one of the best
whole-body cardio workouts and is a sport you can enjoy for a
lifetime. FR club members have open swim privileges during certain
hours.
When is the
pool available for open swim time? Why are pool hours limited, and do
I have any say in the matter?
The availability
of the pool for FR club member open swim time changes daily, much like
the weather. This is in part due to TI’s need to prioritize lessons,
and in part due to the absence of a full time lifeguard. TI must
follow the legal and safety requirement that every swimmer MUST be
accompanied by a “swim buddy” who agrees to remain on deck inside the
pool room for the duration of swim. Everyone who enters the pool must
also sign two waivers. As the Studio Manager, I spend several
hours most days in the Swim Studio and can therefore easily serve as
your “swim buddy” so you don’t have to recruit someone to watch you
swim. If you talk to me or give me a call/email ahead of time, I can
sometimes work with your schedule. If you see the lights are on in the
Studio, stop in and say hi!
How do I know
when the pool is open and how do I sign up to use it?
On the main
level of FR, at the front desk of the club, you will find the Pool
Availability Report on a clipboard. This report, issued daily, will
let members know what hours are available for free swim time the next
day. The report is out the day before, so FR club members sign up or
call the front desk ahead of time to reserve space.
Why is the pool temperature kept at about 89
degrees Fahrenheit?
So
your toes will feel tingly warm when you step in. Total Immersion is a
swim instruction business, and we rely on our lessons in order to be
able to keep the pool open and available for club member use outside
of lessons. The pool is always kept at a temperature that is
comfortable to teach and learn in for hours at a time, so you will
notice that it feels warmer than a large lap pool such as NCCC.
Are
there any discounts on lessons for club members or locals?

FAQs for Everyone:
What is Total Immersion
(TI)?
No matter your
age or ability, swimming is an essential life skill. Total Immersion
is a foolproof approach to teaching “fishlike” swimming which brings
results faster than conventional methods and helps any student master
a fluent, efficient, and beautiful swimming technique. Additionally,
TI coaches are committed to providing demonstration and take a
hands-on approach when necessary.
What
is Fishlike swimming?
While some
traditional instruction focuses on pulling, kicking, and endless laps,
TI teaches you to swim with the effortless grace of fish by becoming
one with the water. TI emphasizes the same patient precision and
refinement taught by martial arts masters. We start with simple skills
and movements and progress by small, easily-mastered steps. Our
students thrive on the attention to detail and the logical sequence of
progressive skills.
What is an Endless Pool?
An Endless Pool
is a small pool with a current – the aquatic equivalent of a
treadmill. The current has fully adjustable speeds ranging from very
gentle to high chop. With the current on, it is possible to
comfortably swim in place at a chosen speed – and to choose a precise
pace. The Endless Pool is a versatile tool which offers advantages for
swimmers of all levels, and has proven to be an ideal learning
environment. Students enjoy the opportunity to learn and practice
drills and have their stroke evaluated at a variety of speeds, while
the coach stays close by to evaluate, support, and provide hands-on
guidance for the swimmer. The water is warm enough to allow swimmers
to focus solely on the instruction without ever feeling chilled.
What happens during a single Total Immersion lesson?
More than you
can imagine. In a single hour, you will have your form analyzed by a
TI Coach via video playback, be introduced to a few basic, but
transformational, principles of Total Immersion based on your skill
level, and learn to experience, understand, and enjoy the water in new
ways.
What can I expect from a
series of TI Swim Studio swim lessons?
Now we’re
talking! When you commit to a series of TI lessons, you will learn to
approach your swimming with an attitude – and expectation -- of
continuous improvement through the introduction of new skills, drills
and focal points at each session. Starting with balance,
streamlining, and rotation and working your way through stroke
development and speed, lessons will be hand-tailored to move at your
pace and meet your needs.
How do I know if TI is right for my skill level and needs? Do you
have open water (OW) programs?
TI coaches are
trained to work with swimmers with variable goals and skill levels,
but many coaches have particular expertise with certain types of
instruction. With coaches on staff who specialize with beginners and
children, to those who are triathlon enthusiasts, we can customize a
program for your needs and goals. When the weather is warm, you can be
certain that we will be hosting OW programs right here in Mirror Lake.
Contact Betsy (info below) for details on our June 21-26, 2009
training camp and check the website for updates as Lake Placid’s open
water season approaches.
How
do I enroll in swim instruction at the TI Swim Studio?
It’s easy- just
call Betsy at 845-901-4219 or email
betsy@totalimmersion.net,
tell me about your swim experience and goals, and I will help you
determine the right program. For the convenience of both swimmers and
instructors, all of our instruction is scheduled by appointment, so
you can select a time slot based on convenience and the availability
of a coach.
I don’t live in the
Adirondacks. Can I find Total Immersion swim instruction where I live?
If you cannot
visit the TI Swim Studio in Lake Placid, you may still be able to find
live TI instruction that is convenient for you. More information about
these options can be found online at
www.totalimmersion.net, or call our New Paltz- based headquarters
